Negotiating the Academic Offer: Protected Time, Pay & Non-Competes

Online Meeting
Tuesday, February 24, 2026 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM   iCalendar Eastern Standard Time

Description:
In this workshop, the course faculty provide a practical, in-depth overview of the key elements of an academic offer and how to negotiate them effectively.  Gain the skills to evaluate offer packages — from salary and benefits to workspace and workload — while identifying non‑competes and other contract risks before you sign.

The AGA Career Development Workshops provide trainee and early career GIs with vital insights, skills and advice for career advancement with education, not formally part of the trainee program curriculum.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and interpret the essential components of an academic offer, including compensation structure, protected time, benefits, space/resources, and clinical/teaching expectations.
  • Evaluate restrictive covenants (non-competes and related clauses) by recognizing key risk factors such as scope, duration, and geography, and understanding when and how they may be negotiable.
  • Prioritize individual negotiation needs by developing a personalized list of role specific priorities (e.g., protected research time, clinical load, mentorship, lab or programmatic support).
  • Apply effective negotiation strategies and language through guided practice, enabling participants to articulate clear “asks,” document agreements appropriately, and approach offer discussions with confidence.
